El Captain Dwayne ‘Stebbe’ Ambusley scored his first goal in five seasons and Dino Williams scored his 14th as Montego Bay United easily beat Tivoli Gardens 2-0 to remain unbeaten in four Monday Night RSPL games this season.
Both goals came in the first 28 minutes but we were able to hold off Tivoli and roll to our 10th victory of the season and return to the top of the point’s tables on 37 points.
A healthy goal difference of 20 goals gives us the edge over Portmore United who had thrashed FC Reno 5-1 on Sunday.
Monday’s victory was the fifth in the last eight games against the Kingston side who are in 10th position, one point above the relegation zone.
Jacomeno Barrett is also showing his experience between the sticks as for the second game running he kept a ‘clean sheet’ but had to pull off some fine saves to protect the lead given to him.
Stebbe gave MBU the lead after just 12 minutes when his left foot shot eluded goalkeeper Edsel Scott and landed in the top far corner of the goal.
It was the 35 year-old midfielder’s first goal since a 6-0 thrashing of Highgate United in a matchup between the then promoted teams at the same venue in the 2011-12 season.
Tivoli Gardens should have levelled the scores two minutes later but goalkeeper Barrett used every inch of his massive frame to get a fingertip to a flick from Shawn McKoy, tipping it over for a corner.
The home team and Williams were not to be kept out too long as less than a minute after Scott blocked a savage drive from the centre forward, Williams switched to the left wing and after being sprung by a pass from midfield, lifted a ball over the custodian with the outside of his right boot and into the far corner of the goal.
Allan Ottey who was playing for the first time in over a month had some close chances but for Scott and the cross bar in one instance in the second half.
